Gone to a galaxy far, far away...

This week saw the loss of Carrie Fisher, the iconic actress who stole our hearts as Leia Organa in the Star Wars franchise. But to me, Carrie was so much more. She was a symbol of strength and feminine power, a reminder that mental illness doesn't have to destroy you. Despite being bipolar, Carrie was a successful mother, actress, writer and advocate for mental health.
I myself have suffered with depression for over 20 years now.  Who knows, maybe it is that funky wiring in my brain that makes it possible for me to see the cards the way I do. I do know that there are days when it is still a struggle to get out of bed and motivated. Medication can work wonders, but for me it is important to have outlets, things to occupy my mind, etc... Here are some things YOU can do if you find yourself struggling (even if you aren't mentally ill):
  • Develop a daily practice of yoga or meditation
  • Journal your dreams, thoughts and feelings
  • Listen to music. Any type will do, but close your eyes and focus on the beat or the lyrics
  • Get one of those calendars that has the positive quotes so you have a daily positive message.
  • Create a "calm down" jar (we'll share instructions on Facebook)
  • Hug yourself or someone else. It releases some awesome chemicals in your brain!
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help
Struggling with mental illness (or even going through a rough patch in life) is nothing to be ashamed of. You are still standing.... Hold on to that. Carrie said it best when she said
"Be afraid, but do it anyways. what's important is the action. you don't have to wait to be confidant - just do it and confidence will follow"
You can find Carrie's documentary WISHFUL DRINKING on HBO or Amazon Video ( a must watch!) or any of her best-selling books are well worth the read. The best way we can honor this amazing woman is to live life the best we can, even if we end up with a few dents and dings....
