7 Ways to Prevent a Home Invasion

Your home is your castle, and it should be the place you feel the safest. However, there are always going to be those people that wouldn’t mind taking what you have. Home invasions involve a robbery where you/witnesses are present during the crime.

Here are a 7 tips that might help you avoid becoming a victim.
  1. Lock your doors and windows.  I know, common sense, but surprisingly many home invasions begin when the criminal walks right in.
  2. Prevent the smash and grab.  Install heavy duty doors, locks and use long screws in door and window frames.  Most criminals prefer to get in and get out quickly. Criminals do not like the noise generated when they have to hit a door multiple times to gain entry.
  3. Lights and more lights.  Floodlights around the outside of the home are a good way to illuminate potential hiding spots.
  4. Watch for suspicious activity.  Criminals like to case a place before they break in.  If you see something that looks out of place, report it.
  5. Watch out for your neighbors.  I mean that in a good way, let them know you are keeping an eye on their homes and let them know about anything suspicious.  Ask them to do the same for you.
  6. Case your place. If you can think like a criminal, you can find places where you are vulnerable. If you cannot, ask a friend to help out.
  7. Close your blinds.  Don’t give criminals a front stage view of the interior of your home.  They can learn the layout, spot valuables and determine the best way to enter your home when you leave them open.
While you can't always prevent a home invasion when the criminal is determined to get what he/she wants, you can take measures to minimize the risk.  Following these simple steps can go a long way toward discouraging even the most determined criminals.
