I have two large flat file storage systems which holds all my drawings, watercolors as well as paper and matting materials. No fancy ipod, ipad or i-whatever for me. I just like popping in classical CD's or listening to my local independent radio station, 107.1 The Peak.

Today I thought I'd share some of my secrets of watercolor painting and give you a tour of my watercolor palette. I use a John Pike plastic palette that I bought 20 years ago and I am still using the same one with many of the same colors placed in the original arrangement. I have my warm earth tones on the left my reds and pinks across the tops and my cool colors to the right. The palette has a...

Watercolor Workshop: Painting Birds

After reading a wonderful article by in Somerset Studio's May/Juneissue, I decided I would try teaching a version of her simple bird drawing and painting techniques to my students. First I cut up watercolor paper for them in easy to mange 4x6" pieces. Then I gathered all my bird photo reference materials. Before they came I drew a few of my own birds. I chose a warbler, an owl and...
